If you have an IRS notice, begin there.
The IRS advises reading the letter carefully and keeping it. A CP or LTR number helps identify the notice in its online search. When the notice requests a response, its due date matters.

A useful note: “My notice number is ___. The date it asks me to respond is ___. My question is ___.” Keep sensitive identifiers out of general inquiries.
Questions to bring to a provider.
- Who would perform the work, and what credentials do they hold?
- What exactly does the proposed service include?
- How are the fees calculated, and when would payment be due?
- What documents would be required, and how are they securely shared?
- What assumptions does the proposed approach depend on?
These are conversation prompts, not a judgment about any particular provider. Obtain the provider’s own written answers before deciding whether its service fits your needs.
